Update on South West London AKI Network

The SW London AKI network involves several hospitals in the SW of London and Surrey. The two main renal units are at St Georges Hospital in Tooting and St Heliers Hospital in Carshalton. The others are Kingston Hospital, Epsom Hospital, Croydon University Hospital, St Peters and Chertsey Hospital, Royal Surrey Hospital and Frimley Park Hospital. The goal of the network is to improve care and outcome for AKI patients in the region through implementation of protocols and pathways, conducting audits and then implementing further changes as necessary.

The network members include renal physicians, intensivists, acute physicians, clinical pathologists, general practitioners and surgeons. The network members met for the first time on the 10th of July and agreed on the protocol for management and transfer criterion for severe AKI and a plan was made for it to be incorporated in the trusts guidelines pages. It has already been modified to suit individual trusts. The plan is to popularise the protocol among the Junior Doctors, Acute Physicians, Intensivists and nurses in each trust through meetings, teaching sessions and seminars in order to improve management of AKI. The team has also agreed to introduce an AKI alert system in all the hospitals. The renal unit registrars taking referrals will be based at St Georges Healthcare NHS Trust 02086721255 bleep 6415 or St Heliers Hospital 020 8296 2000 bleep 665 (please see below).
